About our Club

  Toastmasters International Logo

Toastmasters is a club that practices public speaking skills, which in turn foster self-confidence and personal growth. You learn by doing, with the comfort of others who share your same concerns about speaking. Ten speeches earn you the title of CTM, Competent Toastmaster. Also learn how to run a meeting, how to introduce speakers, give evaluations, and be comfortable when asked to stand up and "say a few words".

Sponsored by Equity Office

Equity Office sponsors our club by lending use of the Auditorium in the South Terraces Building, and publishes the benefits of Toastmasters in their newsletters. Our club is open to all visitors - so bring a friend with you!.

Meetings are Fun!

Each meeting consists of speeches, evaluations, impromptu table topics and awards. Evaluators listen intently to the speakers and are asked to give a 2 minute evaluation of the speech toward the end of the program. Evaluations are an important part of the program, and most speakers look forward to honest feedback. A Table Topic is an impromptu speech where a topic is thrown on the table and someone has to elaborate on the subject for 45 seconds. The participant may choose to talk about the topic, or any subject they wish using the current topic as a launch pad into another topic. Many members have commented that this is one of the most beneficial and enjoyable part of the meeting. You get the chance to practice speaking with no prior preparation. While this may sound uncomfortable - it isn't! The Toastmaster environment is one of mutual understanding and support, enabling the participant a safe practice environment. The audience gets the opportunity to vote on favorite speakers in the categories of Speaker, Table Topics, and Evaluator. Ribbons are awarded at the end of the program and visitors are always encouraged to give comments and thoughts about the meeting.

There's More

Contests are held periodically and the club winner represents us in the area contests. Read more about contests in Frequently Asked Questions. The Toastmaster Magazine (included with membership) gives members tips on speech building and presentations every month. Clubs are categorized by size and earn points in the Distinguished Club Program. The top 5 clubs of each club size earn the title Presidents Distinguished Club.
